Green-Schools Car-Pool Day
Wednesday 10th March 2010 - Please read the information below.
A car pool or car sharing is when two or more people travel together in one car, instead of separately. Car pooling to school means that if one parent drives pupils to school one day (or week depending on what suits), another parent will drive the next day – sharing the job! If you can’t get involved in a car share scheme for the school journey, you could organise to share lifts with your neighbours or colleagues for trips to the shops or commuting to work.
Advantages of Car sharing
• Saves money by sharing the cost of petrol/ diesel
• Reduces journey times (by reducing the number of cars on the road)
• Reduces congestion around the school gates
• Helps to improve the environment & reduce emissions
Tips & Hints for Setting up a Car Pool
• Determine a route & schedule. Establish morning pick up points & a place to meet for the trip home
• For a car pool to work, everyone has to be punctual! The group can decide to allow a waiting time of 2-3 minutes if everyone agrees.
• Establish how costs will be shared among the group
• Establish ground rules regarding seatbelts, behaviour on the journey etc, and make sure pupils are aware of the rules
• Draw up a schedule for driving responsibilities i.e. if parents will drive on a daily, weekly or monthly basis
• Drivers should drive carefully, never use their mobile while driving & keep their car clean and in good repair
Lines of communication are very important! If a driver is sick, an alternative driver or plan for pupils to get to school should be in place. If a pupil is sick, the driver should be contacted as soon as possible. All parents in the car share scheme should have home, work and mobile numbers for the other parents/ drivers (and pupils if they have mobiles).
• Avoid side trips on the way home, unless agreed prior to the day. The car share scheme is for school journeys.
• Give your car pool some time to work, as it may take a few weeks for everyone’s routines to slot together!
Case Study – Wilburn Elementary, USA
In Wilburn Elementary in Wake County, USA, bus transportation is provided for all pupils. However for those who prefer to come by car, carpools are used to ensure children’s safety around the school gate, as well as reducing congestion and environmental impacts.
Parents must provide proof of residency, and then apply in writing to collect children from a designated carpool lane at the school entrance. The application form includes the names of all children in the carpool, and the names of adults authorised to collect them. Parents are given a carpool number which children learn off. Pupils are not allowed from the carpool lane into any car without the number on display. Pupils leave class according to their carpool numbers (in three lots with ten minutes between each pick up), so they are not in the area too early or late.
To Support Car Pools, Schools can…
• Organise a ‘meet & greet’ morning to introduce parents & sign car-pool buddies up, even if it is only for a trial period
• Encourage car pool schemes by allowing them priority places near the school gate to drop off pupils
• Encourage participants to change car pool buddies if routes do not work out the first time
• Maintain support for car pools through publicity i.e. in the schools newsletter or website in the local media, or on the Green Schools notice board
Case Study – Bedzed, UK ( www.bedzed.org.uk)
An eco-housing association in Beddington in the UK (BedZED) encourages residents to sell their cars and join a car club so there are less cars in the area! Residents use public transport for everyday journeys, but can use a car when they need one, for an hour or longer if needed. Residents don’t have to worry about costs such as insurance or tax, as they pay for the time and distance they use.

Friday 8th January, 2009
The following statement has been extracted from the Department of Education & Science website:
08 January, 2010 - Minister O'Keeffe tells schools to close for first three days of next week
The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD, has told all primary and post-primary schools to close on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week due to the bad weather.
Minister O'Keeffe took the decision in the interest of the welfare of school children.
The Minister took the decision following a meeting today [Friday] of the Government's emergency planning group and in the context of the poor weather outlook for the coming days.
Minister O'Keeffe said: 'I took the decision to close all schools based on my concern for the health and safety of school children in these very challenging weather conditions.
'I considered, in particular, the forecast for snowfall on Sunday and Monday which will cause further disruption.
'Although most schools decided not to open this week and many more will take the same decision next week, I wanted to bring clarity and certainty to the position for parents and students by telling all schools to close.
'While it may be that some schools would have been in a position to open depending on the weather, I consider on balance that the responsible and prudent approach at this stage is to close schools in the interest of safety.
'The situation will be reviewed on Tuesday,' said Minister O'Keeffe.
Minister O'Keeffe stressed that the decision will not affect the local decision-making powers of school boards of management.
'I am taking this decision in particularly exceptional circumstances and against a backdrop of extremely bad weather conditions,' said Minister O'Keeffe.
He said his Department officials will be discussing with the education partners ways in which the impact of the closures can be minimised, particularly for examination classes.
Wednesday 6th January, 2010
Due to the serious deterioration in the weather conditions the school will remain closed until Monday 11th January.
Monday 30th November
We have made two changes to the published calendar as a result of the proposed strike on Thursday 3rd December. To minimise class loss we have cancelled the Staff Day on 8th December and will hold the 1st Year PTM on this day instead. This means the 7th December will be a full school day.
Sat 21st November

Swine Flu
The school has taken several steps to minimise the threat of swine flu and we are asking pupils and their families to take every precaution to assist in keeping the flu out of the school.
The following work has been carried out:
- Student toilet facilities have been upgraded - handbasins, hot water, hand-dryers, soap dispensers, hand gel
- Disposable tissues and hand gel will be available in every classroom
- Extra care will be taken in cleaning the building each day - wiping keyboards, light switches and door-handles etc.
Pupils can play their parts in the following ways:
- Bring a supply of tissues to school each day and use a tissue once only when coughing or sneezing
- Dispose of tissues in the bin located in the classroom or on the corridors
- Wash hands or use the hand gel after sneezing or coughing
- Never sneeze or cough without covering your nose/mouth area
- Wash hands after using the toilet or before eating
- Do not share pens/pencils or other equipment
- Do not share wind instruments in the music classes
If a pupil shows signs or symptoms of flu he should be kept at home. If he presents with symptoms in school he will be isolated from other students and staff until he can be collected

He urged students not to settle for mediocrity in anything that they do but to strive always to excel. He thanked the very generous sponsors who never fail to support the school when called upon.
He then welcomed the guest speaker on the night, Mr. Brian Cody, the manager of the all-Ireland hurling champions, Kilkenny.
The audiece hung on the very encouraging words of a man who spoke of the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations of individuals he had worked with on the road to success. Brian particularly emphasised the fact that many talented under-age hurlers in Kilkenny had failed to make it to the senior ranks while other senior medal winners had never been picked at minor or under-21 level. Talent alone will not guarantee success. It must be accompanied by dedication to task, commitment and hard work. These same ingredients are necessary for academic success.
It was clear from the reaction of the students that this was a man who knew how to tap into what makes students tick. The warm applause confirmed that all present were very taken by Brians honest and motivating words.
This year saw the dawning of a new era in the history of the awards in the school. The organising committee headed by Laura Walshe and Anne Ahern commissioned a very impressive ceramic plaque for each recipient. The plaque, which is in fact a wall hanging, was the work of local craftsperson Bev Carbery.
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the presentation of the sixth year student of the year and the Anne Brennan award.
The Anne Brennan Award is presented each year to the student who possesses some of the traits of our late secretary, Anne, who was renowned for her caring and generous spirit. Barry Doyle, the winner, has been a member of Meitheal and the Student Representative Council, and has given generously of his time in helping to make the school a better place for everybody.
The sixth year student of the year was Patrick Lord. His Yearhead, Mrs. Williamson, spoke of him as a very worthy recipient. She highlighted his ability to get on well with students and teachers alike. His commitment to all aspects of school life and his level of participation won him the admiration of his peers. His application to his academic responsibilities was an example for all to follow. In reply Patrick paid tribute to his parents for deciding to send him to a school where he had five very happy years even though it was 15 miles away from his home.
He thanked his teachers for all of their hard work and paid particular tribute to his Yearhead Louise Williamson for her guidance and commitment to the sixth year students.
